TWO KINDS OF MORALISTS
( see also the "feeling vs intelligence" quarrel )

THE 'CLASSICAL' OR 'TRADITIONAL' MORALIST

Quite common in academic schools, universities or conservatoires.

Is convinced that :
- popular music is decadent, and not worthy of any interest from his part
- society itself is decadent
- no music can ever get better than Bach's music
- only difficult, hardly understandable music is worth it
- every composer should live in due respect to all the masters that were his predecessors
- if Mozart was alive, he would work at Ircam or someplace of the sort

THE 'MODERN' OR 'POPULAR' MORALIST

Quite common everywhere, usually young and cool.

Is convinced that :
- popular music is the only music in the world - music which is not well known is not worth of any consideration
- society is not decadent at all
- music is better now that it has ever been before, for the simple reason that nothing else exists
- everything before rythm'n blues, and everything looking more or less official, is "classical music", thus uninteresting
- music has to be instantly understandable
- if Mozart was living, he would be a famous pop star
